Tasting of the Sea

Shimmer January is the month of gorgeous cover art. First Lightspeed, and now Shimmer. An author could get used to this.

Tasting of the Sea is one of those stories that did not begin as it meant to go on. It went through several evolutions before finding out what sort of thing it wanted to be when it grew up. As it turns out, it wanted to be something like a fairytale, with clockwork and broken hearts, where people don’t necessarily get what they want, but they get what they need.

Ana leans on the balcony rail, watching the clockmaker across the broad expanse of emerald lawn. Beneath the spreading oak, sunlight dapples him. He is bent to his work, quick fingers catching gears, twists of wire, and bits of jeweled thread, stitching together a brand new heart.

You can read the rest of the story by picking up a copy of Shimmer #16. You can also read wonderful stories by K.M. Szpara, Charlie Bookout, Greg Leunig, Dennis Y. Ginoza, Christine Yant, Cate Gardner, William Jablonsky, Rebecca Emanuelsen, Laura Hinkle, Nicole M. Taylor, M. Bennardo, and Helena Bell. Why on earth would you pass up the chance at to get an issue with all that? If you’re still not convinced, you can read a sample of each story on the Shimmer’s website. Now get to it!
