Giveaway: Upgraded

upgradedCyborgs are awesome. We all know it. So why wouldn’t you want to read about them? Don’t answer that, it’s a trick question. Because I’m a nice person, I want to enable your desire to read about cyborgs. To that end, I’m giving away a copy of Upgraded, an anthology filled with stories by the likes of Elizabeth Bear, Tobias S. Buckell, Ken Liu, Rachel Swirsky, and Benjanun Sriduangkaew, among others. It’s about cyborgs and it’s edited by a cyborg, namely Neil Clarke, of Clarkesworld fame. Should you need more convincing, the entire ToC is available here.

I had hoped to come up with some sort of super-clever and thematically relevant contest, but as it turns out, I’m not a clever person. So… If you want to win a copy of Upgraded, comment on this post and tell me why you think cyborgs are awesome. Or, if you’re anti-cyborg, tell me why they’re not awesome. Or, if you’re not into explaining yourself and think I should mind my own damned business, leave a cyborg-neutral comment. The winner will be chosen by a random number generator, or maybe my corgi, so your pro, anti, or indifferent cyborg stance will not impact your chance of winning.

The contest will be open until September 30, 2014, why not.

ETA: The random number generator has decreed musingaloud, who commented over on LJ, to be the winner. Thank you everyone for your fabulous comments, and congratulations, Pam!

  1. Well, at some point, it may become medically necessary for me to become a cyborg, so I vote pro-cyborg.

Cyborgs are awesome because lasers! And such. Or something. Maybe?

    Side note: You’re awesome!

  3. Put me down as pro-cyborg. They’re faster, smarter, stronger. They can route facebook notifications directly to their eyeballs. They don’t have to go to the bathroom, but if they did have to go to the bathroom, they could play words with friends without worrying about dropping their phone in the toilet. They can play words with friends without using their fingers. Cyborgs have 10,000 words for how to kill you, but not a single word for “love”. Cyborgs spell it “luv”. Cyborgs don’t have time for unnecessary vowels. Cyborgs can play “luv” on words with friends and get away with it.

On the other hand, we can incapacitate them all by simply pushing out the new cyborgOS 8, so there’s that.

  4. Cyborgs are awesome because they blur the line of human and machine. Who doesn’t want to upgrade their body? I LOVE robots so cyborgs are an easy like–human/robot love child. ^_^ Plus they allow us to investigate what it means to be human.

  5. I wonder if corgi-cyborgs will be a thing someday. They’re so cute you could turn them unto evil half machines and nobody would notice.
    *evil laugh*

Cyborgs are as cyborgs do. Awesome ones are awesome. Evil ones are evil. I like to read about them, either way.

What’s not to like? I’ve wanted to be a cyborg since I was a kid watching “The Six Million Dollar Man” in the ’70’s. And I want a dog cyborg, too. I could download stories straight from my head to slush piles everywhere!

  8. Oh, that’s funny. I just tweeted about cyborgs.

Today I signed up for a neurobiology class at our local biohacker space, in which, on a pleasant Sunday afternoon, we will dissect a sheep’s brain. One free brain for each attendee. True story.

Why is this important? Well, I plan to use this knowledge to build a sheepborg cyber army. If anyone else cares to create their own farm animal army (farmy), we can host a friendly battle in a local park of your choosing. But beware. My sheepborg are united in cause. They shall shout, “Baaah ram ewe! Pew pew pew!” And then, I will win.

    Sweet, sweet robot love.
    ‘Nuff said.

  10. I am also pro-cyborg, not only because it gives the disabled abilities they might not otherwise have (look up some current prosthetic limbs available, honestly science is amazing you guys) but also because who wouldn’t want superhuman abilities??

Can I say something about that cover? Julie Dillion is an amazing artist. I’m agape at her work every time. This included.

  11. Cyborgs are awesome because I got hooked on Bionic Commando back when the original arcade game came out and I was fifteen or so.
